Family airport taxis: seats, luggage and extra stops
Two adults, two children and four cases will not fit in the first car that answers. Match the vehicle to the trip before you leave the house.
Airport transfers with children go wrong in predictable ways: the car is too small, there is no child seat, or nobody allowed for the extra stop at a grandparent’s house. Tell the operator the whole trip when you first call.
Count people and bags, then pick the car
- Saloon — two adults, two cabin bags, maybe one hold case.
- Estate — two or three people plus several large cases.
- MPV or people carrier — families, extra seats, pushchairs and a boot that actually closes.
- Two cars — cheaper and less stressful than forcing eight people into one vehicle.
Child seats
UK taxi and private-hire rules differ from a private car, but most families still want a proper seat. Ask whether the firm can provide an infant, toddler or booster seat, and say so when you book. If you prefer your own, mention it so the driver leaves space.
Tip. Fitting a seat at 5am on the driveway wastes the buffer you built in. Have the seat ready, or ask the driver to arrive with it already installed.
Extra stops
Collecting a second household, dropping a relative, or stopping for a forgotten passport all take time. Tell the operator the extra address up front so it is in the quote. A surprise detour on the day is how fixed prices turn into an argument.
Meeting at the airport
With children, a named meeting point matters more than a cheap fare. Ask whether the driver comes into arrivals with a sign, waits at a specific door, or stays in short-stay parking. Share a mobile that is not packed in the hold luggage.
Book the vehicle for the family you actually travel with, not the family you wish would pack lighter.
